History of Chakrata
In olden times Chakrata was known as Jaunsar-Bawar. But the region was conquered by the British after the Gurkhas were defeated during the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814–1816. It was then annexed by the British residents of Delhi at Chakrata in 1816-17. The first settlement here was built by “Captain Birch”. At present, an army cantonment exists here. The cantonment at Chakrata was established in 1866 by Colonel Hume, Colonel of the 55th Regiment of the British Indian Army.
