History of Lansdowne
In the olden times, this hill station was known as ‘Kaludanda’ or “Kalu Danda” village, which means the Black Hills. But at the time when the Viceroy Lord Lansdowne (1888-1894) developed this place a lot, and for this reason, it was named Lansdowne after the Viceroy Lord Lansdowne.
At present, it is the headquarters of the Garhwal Rifles, although earlier the headquarters of the Garhwal Rifles was at Almora. But from Almora on November 5, 1887, this headquarter was shifted to Lansdowne. The city was prepared as a cantonment, and here the recruit training of the Garhwal Rifles was started by the British.
