Before 1983, there were three sanctuaries in this national park – Motichur Sanctuary established in 1964, Rajaji Sanctuary and National Park established in 1948, and Chilla Sanctuary established in 1977, these three were merged to form Rajaji Tiger Reserve on 20 April 2015. This sanctuary was named Rajaji National Park after the great freedom fighter of India, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari.
